About Shadow Puppet Jewelry

Shadow puppet carved jewelry is an innovative fusion of traditional Chinese shadow puppetry and modern fashion, transforming ancient leather-carving techniques into wearable and collectible art. Originating in the Han Dynasty, shadow puppetry uses carved animal hide (such as donkey or cow leather) to depict theatrical characters and tell stories through light and shadow. It was inscribed on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2011. This jewelry preserves the traditional “push-leather, guided-knife” openwork carving technique, known for its delicate, flowing lines. Designs often feature auspicious traditional motifs such as cloud, water, and floral patterns.

Craft Process

Material Preparation: Leather tanning, dehairing, and air-drying
Pattern Transfer & Carving: Designs are traced onto leather and intricately carved using dozens of specialized tools
Coloring: A blend of traditional mineral pigments and modern eco-friendly paints
Assembly: Heat shaping, then combined with metal fittings to create earrings, necklaces, brooches, and more
